Enhydra's JaWE Chosen as a Base of Abacus' Workflow System
 | | Abacus
Abacus creates its own worflow system based on Enhydra's JaWE and OpenSymphony's OSWorkflow. |
ABACUS
Research AG has been developing business software since 1985. Today,
the company has 150 employees on the payroll. With more than 57,000
software modules sold, with over 25,000 individual , small & medium
corporations in Switzerland processing some 700,000 salary statements
each month, and 170,000 accountancy entries, ABACUS has become a byword
in the provision of accounting software for small and medium-sized
enterprises in Switzerland.
ABACUS software is a one-stop
solution for SMEs that comprises order processing/PPS, accounting, cost
accounting, wage accounting, human resources management, fixed-asset
accounting, performance and project accounting, and address management.
As
a supplier of various business software compontens with the aim to
constantly improve and expand it's functionality, ABACUS got customer
feedback that expressed the requirements for business process modelling
which integrates with other ABACUS components. Since some years ABACUS
focuses on Java based software development with the integration of
open-source components where suitable. ABACUS chose the Java-based
Enhydra's JaWE
(graphical workflow editing) from ObjectWeb and OpenSymphony's
OSWorkflow (workflow server) as the base of their workflow system,
because these two were the most mature open-source solutions at the
start of the project and they covered most of ABACUS' needs for a
workflow system. Both are being modified now at ABACUS to work well
together and tightly integrate with already existing Abacus solutions.
The Abacus workflow system is currently in beta-testing with selected
customers and is scheduled for first release in the end of 2004.

ATSi
 | |
ATSi
uses JOnAS for two information portals: 'Contaxx' a customer
information and contact manager, 'Networx' a system and network asset
tracker. |
ATSi is an
import/export software development company in the U.S. whose legacy
software suite comprises all aspects of freight transport including air

contact manager, called 'Contaxx'; and a system and network asset
tracker, called 'Networx'.
ATSi is about to put in production
two new systems an issue tracking system, called 'CaseTrax', which will
provide customers with the ability to directly track and collaborate on
their issues over the Web; and a Customs clearance tracking and EDI
communication system, called 'ACEx' ("ACE", or "Automated Commercial
Environment", is a new e-commerce program from U.S. Customs for
handling electronic filing of clearance documents for import and

CNAF
Advanced Data Mining System of CNAF Built on Top of JOnAS
| CNAF
build a J2EE intranet application handling data mining requests, OLAP
queries, pre-defined reports and executive dashboards. The solution is
deployed and JOnAS on 8 servers and provides accross 123 local offices
throughout France. |
The Caisse
Nationale d'Allocations Familiales (CNAF) manages the family branch of
France's national social services program with a budget of 50 billion
Euros. Over 10,000 data items for a population of over 10 million
beneficiaries of legal, family and social allowances are stored in
2-tiered data warehouses hosted on SAS servers. J2EE intranet
applications deployed on
JOnAS
handle data mining requests, OLAP queries, pre-defined reports and
executive dashboards for users spread across 123 local offices
throughout France.
In parallel to major evolutions towards J2EE
projected for mid 2006, CNAF has decided, for the needs of the
decisional computing system, to put a production level J2EE
infrastructure into place. This project started in May 2003. At the
demand of the IT direction, CNAF defined the architecture of execution
for J2EE application and the platform was to be in production byend of
2003. CNAF chosed
JOnAS
because of its technical qualities, and because of its backing by
INRIA, France Telecom and Bull. The open-source (LGPL) license
permitted CNAF to be rapidly operational, in line with the expected
delays, and to be very reactive to covering the needs.
JOnAS is deployed on AIX 4.3.3 operating systems using
Apache 2.0 as a frontal in 8 major computing centers. In parallel,
JOnAS is largely used by J2EE developers...
"The choice of
JOnAS
was supported by the technical qualities of ObjectWeb's J2EE
application server and because of its support by trustworthy actors
such as Bull, INRIA and France Telecom", explained Nicolas Buonomo,
Middleware Infrastructure Manager with CNAF."The system has been in
production for 1 year now. Accessed daily by hundreds of users from our
123 local offices, it just never crashed: we did not receive a single
incident report!"
DPMA
French Ministry of Finances Uses Bonita for its Flexibility
 | |
Bonita is the workflow engine of a new application to manage the signature process within DPMA. |
Laurence
Davi, Project Manager at DPMA, a department of French Ministry of
Finances says: "back in summer 2004, we were asked to develop a new
application to manage the signature process within the department. The
choice of using a workflow supporting tool was natural for us, since we
already had a significant experience of developing applications based
on such products, but on the commercial side."
"We decided to go Open source for this project, and choose the
Bonita
open source workflow from the ObjectWeb consortium, with the help of
Bull Service operation. The project has been quite successful, and we
have now a fully functional prototype with a dedicated user front-end
relying on top of the
Bonita workflow engine executive."
"What is our feedback about
Bonita ? Well, on the technical side, we used extensively the flexibility of
Bonita,
and the possibility to define on-the-fly the characteristics of a
process instance. And we really have been impressed by the reactivity
of the development team, which in some occasions has solved problems
for us overnight!"

JOINT FORCE COMMAND
 | |
U.S.
Joint Forces Command (JFCOM) has started using a new data-sharing
system with the eXo Platform, the ObjectWeb JSR 168 certified portal. |
JFCOM
has started using a new data-sharing system designed to make it easier
for coalition forces to manage and access warfighting information in
Iraq. In a March 28 announcement, JFCOM officials emphasized that the
Cross Domain Collaborative Information Environment (CDCIE) uses Java 2
Platform, Enterprise Edition and open standards that increase
interoperability.
"The system avoids solutions that lock
command officials into using certain vendors and their products", said
Boyd Fletcher, prototype development lead engineer at JFCOM. The
command, one of the military's nine unified combatant commands located
in Norfolk, Va., ensures that the services and defense agencies work
together and with coalition countries.
"CDCIE allows JFCOM
officials to manage the access of U.S. warfighting information with
coalition forces. It also lets them make available the information
located in different military networks", Fletcher said. "CDCIE uses two
commercial products: eXo platform, a portal tool from eXo Platform,
located in Paris, and WebFile Server, document management and workflow
software from Xythos Software located in San Francisco. Both products
use open Web standards that made them attractive to JFCOM officials",
company officials said.
Libre Source

JOnAS
is used in LibreSource, a platform used to develop the SPIS project
that involves contributors from US, Europe & Japan Space Agencies. |
LibreSource
is a software platform dedicated to the software development and
management of distributed communities. LibreSource is the collaborative
platform used to develop the open-source project SPIS, that aims at
developing a software toolkit for spacecraft-plasma interactions and
spacecraft charging modelling. Initiated and supported by the European
Space Agency (ESA) and mainly designed by ONERA and Artenum, SPIS was
started in December 2002 in the frame of the scientific and industrial
SPINE community.
Initially European, the SPINE community is
international today, with about bout 100 members, including the
American (NASA, US-Air Force) and Japanese (JAXA) Agencies. In
extension, LibreSource Enterprise Edition, has been chosen by these
space agencies as a tool of collaborative work and centralised
archiving in the frame of a program of standardisation and
cross-validation of spacecraft charging simulation software. The
SPINE's LibreSource platform is hosted by Artenum.
LibreSource's
design, based on the JAVA/J2EE technology and the application sever
JOnAS resulting from the ObjectWeb project, enabled to develop a set of
robust applications, while disregarding the underlying software
architecture.

OPENWIDE
JOnAS selected by Open Wide for Electronic Fines Processing
 | |
Open Wide designed a full open-source implementation of the Clip-card patented system of electronic fines, based on JOnAS. |
Parking
tickets recovery is a nightmare for the French administration. Built
around the smart-card, the idea of Clip-Card is to give an electronic
ticket in place of the paper fine.
An experiment of this
patented invention has been undertaken in the city of Cannes, France.
Open Wide teamed up with Thales-IS to propose a cost-effective
technical architecture, with a 100% open-source scenario. JOnAS won the
contest for the most reliable and efficient J2EE 1.3 server.
When
administrative authorizations are delivered, JOnAS will process 320,000
tickets a year, through the hundreds of SMS sent daily from the police
crew PDAs, for the sole city of Cannes.
PICA
 | |
The eXo Platform proved to be a very flexible, cost-effective foundation upon which to build the PICA Portal. |
PICA
Group, the leading provider of professional liability insurance for
podiatric physicians in the U.S., is a corporation made up of multiple
insurance companies that provide a multitude of insurance services to
podiatrists and chiropractors. An initiative was launched at PICA to
enhance their web presence and to start providing dynamic online
services to its agents and policyholders. Trinisys was hired in August
of 2004 by PICA Group, to realize this vision by developing an
enterprise portal solution. Since low cost was one of the most
important requirements, only open source portals were considered. Some
of the top contenders included Liferay, Gridsphere, eXo Platform and
Jetspeed.
For a number of reasons the
eXo Platform
was chosen. It was determined that the eXo Platform would be able to
facilitate PICA's design requirements without modifications to the
portal source code. The eXo Platform has an active user community
making it relatively easy to find discussions on and solutions to
problems. The developers were easy to work with and allowed us to
contribute some modifications to the core eXo Platform source code. The
eXo Platform portal proved to have several advantages over its
competitors, especially where layout and configuration was concerned.
The eXo Platform proved to be a very flexible, cost-effective
foundation upon which to build the PICA Portal. It allowed the seamless
integration of content and business functionality, as well as providing
the flexibility required to implement the desired look-and-feel.
The PICA Group now has a solid platform upon which they can continue to
grow their web presence as future business needs require.
